Under the provisions set forth in Section 589 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is mandated the responsibility of registering certain convicted sex offenders who live, work or attend school in Jackson County Missouri. The task of the registration process and enforcement is assigned to the Sex Offender Registration Enforcement Unit.
This Unit is comprised of one supervisor, two full time detectives and several part time clerical staff.
The registered offenders are required to respond to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in person to update their registration information. If an offender’s victim is less than 18 years of age, the offender reports to the Sheriff’s Office every 90 days. If the victim is over 18 years of age the offender reports to the Sheriff’s Office every six months.

When these efforts do not bring positive results, the non compliant offender is assigned to a detective to locate and bring the offender into compliance, or, prepare a case against the offender and present the case to the prosecutor’s office for the filing of criminal charges against the offender for Failure to Register. Detectives also investigate reports of the offenders giving incorrect addresses, as well as any other report of the offender being in violation of the registration requirements.
In addition to locating non compliant offenders, this Unit investigates reports of offenders residing within 1000 feet of a school or childcare facility. If it is determined the offender is in violation of this law, the offender is given 10 business days to relocate before the violation is submitted to the prosecutor’s office for filing of criminal charges, after the appropriate investigation is conducted.
Knowledge is the first line of defense in protecting our children and adults alike from sexually based offenses. Accurate, detailed information about convicted sex offenders and their whereabouts is paramount when trying to make a safe environment where we work, live and play.
The public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity they observe to their local authorities and to report any information about an offender whose name is on the sex offender list to the S.O.R.E. Unit.

If the offender fails to report to the Sheriff when required to do so, this Unit will begin a process to contact the offender in order to bring the offender into compliance. This process includes, but is not limited to, contacting the offender by telephone (residence and work); the offender is sent a letter with the non compliance notification; local authorities are requested to contact the offender; contacting known associates or family members of the offender; and checking with detention facilities to determine if the offender is incarcerated. |
