Traffic Unit

In 2006, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the Missouri Department of Transportation to form a unit whose sole purpose would be traffic law enforcement.  The Traffic Unit is comprised of one sergeant and four deputies.

For years, Jackson County has been ranked as #1 in the State of Missouri for traffic fatalities, and for alcohol related accidents.

Jackson County covers 607 square miles and contains over 500 miles of roadways.  There were 38,406 traffic accidents in 2007 resulting in 15,332 injuries plus 119 fatalities.  Alcohol was involved in 21.1% of those accidents.  In addition to patrolling these roadways, this unit participates in operations with the Jackson County Traffic Safety Task Force including sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols for impaired drivers (Wolf Packs).
